How to Save Money with a Heat Pump

Having a heat pump installed in your home or business can be an extremely sensible investment and save you money compared to many other types of fuel. Aztec Heat Pumps specialise in ground and air source heat pump installation throughout Suffolk, Essex, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. Here we take a detailed look at the type of savings which can be made with each type of pump.

Lower Running and Maintenance Costs

Both air source and ground source heating systems are cheaper to run than electric or oil-fired central heating systems, and gas cylinders. Figures show they are as cheap to run as a mains gas system. These types of system do still need electricity to operate the pump, but far less than you would use otherwise.

Air and ground source pumps are both easy to maintain, requiring only a simple annual check. As both types of pump have a lifespan of around 20 years, they should last longer than a conventional boiler. At Aztec all our heat pumps come with a guarantee or warranty, with the exact type depending on the brand we install.

Both Types Save You Money

Air source heat pump installation costs will be lower, as they simply need a wall to be attached to and space for a good airflow. Ground source pumps need room for a network of pipes, usually installed in a garden.

However ground source heating systems are more efficient of the two, as their energy comes from the ground rather than the air. Because the ground temperature is less likely to dip in winter months than the air temperature, this means the pump needs to use less electricity to heat the water up. You can therefore expect to achieve more savings on fuel bills. Installation costs can be reduced further if your heat pump is planned in at the design stage, for example in a new-build property.

A Boost for Businesses

Heat pumps can offer businesses the chance to make big savings. Many companies have separate buildings on the same site, or operate from different locations, so any savings can be magnified.

As well as keeping employees warm in winter, they can effectively act as air conditioners in the summer months, because the pump’s circuit is fully reversible. This helps create a much healthier atmosphere to work in, so there is likely to be less time lost through staff sickness. It also saves space, because you will not need any fuel storage facilities on site. Pumps offer a very safe source of fuel, because there is no combustion involved, meaning the risk of fire is reduced.

The Renewable Heat Incentive

The RHI is a government initiative which is aimed at encouraging people to invest in environmentally-friendly heating systems, and this covers both air source and ground source heat pumps. Households who have had pumps installed currently receive quarterly payments for a period of seven years, while for commercial premises this is over a period of 20 years. This means you can save on your fuel running costs, and get some money back too.

The exact amount of money you receive will depend on the type of renewable technology you have had installed and how many kw/H of power you generate. At Aztec Heat Pumps we will be able to help you with your application for RHI payments.

Aztec Heat Pumps, (link: http://www.aztecheatpumps.co.uk/) are based near Saxmundham in Suffolk, within easy reach of Ipswich and Woodbridge.

CASE STUDY – AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP SYSTEM FOR INSECT BREEDING PLANT IN ESSEX

A highly efficient and eco-friendly air source heat pump system from Samsung Electronics was the commercial heating solution for local UK business Peregrine Live Food, an insect breeding plant based in Harlow, Essex.

As a business that runs and relies on a consistent temperature of internal heating to breed insects for the pet food market, when faced with a significant construction of the two story and 17m square factory, with six 11x6m breeding rooms, a new approach to heating was critical for Peregrine Live Food.

Previously the breeding rooms which house the insects were heated using oil filled radiators causing a number of problems, including high running costs, intensive labour requirements to check and reset the thermostats daily, and inconsistent heat across the rooms. The insufficient heating resulted in varied growth rates of the insects requiring increased labour to continually move the breeding boxes around.

To overcome these problems a system was designed by Aztec Heat Pumps with assistance from The Energy Lab and Freedom Heat Pumps. The solution included installing a pair of high performing and economical Samsung 16kW EHS Air Source Heat Pumps, heating a 1000-liter buffer tank to 48C. Each of the breeding rooms had eleven 1200×600 radiators installed with independent circuits taking energy from the central buffer. Each circuit is controlled by an ESBE GRA111 blending valve, reading temperatures at four locations on the system providing a consistent heat required by the factory.

Temperature within 0.5 degrees
The project was taken on to heat three rooms used for the insect breeding process within the factory and required to be kept within 0.5 of a degree at all times. The Samsung 16kW EHS Air Source Heat Pumps installed are eco-friendly, compatible with green energy systems and are highly efficient using an all-in-one system with high performing heat pump technology, ideal for an environment requiring such precision heating.

Weather compensation feature
The Samsung 16kW EHS Air Source Heat Pump system met all requirements, being compact, quiet and energy efficient, along with features and controls that suited this unique business. The weather compensation feature of the air source heating was introduced as the seasons changed and summer arrived, with the system bringing the buffer temperature down to prevent the breeding rooms temperatures from over running. This allowed the breeding rooms to be controlled at 33.4C with a consistent and even temperature across the room ideal for the insect breeding facility.

“Peregrine Live Foods faced a challenge in sourcing the most efficient and cost effective solution for heating their insect breeding factory,” explained Paul Brooks Director of Aztec Solar Engineering. “When taking on this project, we understood the requirements for a high performance and economic heat pump technology and believed Samsung’s range of EHS Air Source Heat Pumps would be ideal for this business. The Samsung heat pumps ultimately solved all the limitations of the original and expensive method at a much lower electricity cost and higher performance.”

Richard Nation – Peregrine Livefoods –

I had spent considerable time looking for a heating solution for my insect breeder facility; a solution that would give me accurate and effective heating with a simple and cost effective running solution.

Once I had spoken with Paul from Aztec I knew that I had found the person who understood my needs perfectly. He designed a straightforward and simple heating system that was capable of controlling the temperatures of my breeder facility, which needs to be maintained with a tolerance of +/- 1C, no matter what time of the year.

The installation was carried out in a very timely manner and to an extremely high standard of workmanship, with constant feedback on how the build was going, any problems that came up and solutions to work round them.

Even after the build Paul remains in contact to ensure that the system is working as I want and has visited site to help me with a couple of issues that I have had.

From design, through installation and after sales service I have been 100% completely happy with Paul and Aztec. I would strongly recommend him to others who are looking for a cost effective, simple yet effective heating solution.

Which Type of Heat Pump is Best for Your Business?

Heat pumps are increasingly being viewed as the technology of the future for commercial customers. More and more companies are realising how important it is to create a ‘green’ image and reduce their carbon footprint, while also reducing the size of their energy bills.

Aztec Heat Pumps specialise in supplying and installing high-quality ground and air source heat pumps in Suffolk, Essex, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. Here we look at the different types of heat pumps, and which one is likely to be the most suitable for your business.

Ground Source May Need A Garden

Air source heat pumps are typically located on the side of a company’s premises, or on a flat roof, transferring energy from outside to inside using a refrigeration circuit.

Ground source heat pumps, on the other hand, transfer heat from the earth, or water, through specially-dug trenches or boreholes outside the property, usually in the garden. Many businesses, especially those operating in office blocks, may not have their own internal or external garden or courtyard to make this viable, or may need permissions from local authorities, so an air source heat pump will probably be the better option.

Specific Exceptions

However, there are some types of businesses which are suitable for ground source heating systems because of their residential nature, such as care homes. Other commercial enterprises, such as leisure and theme parks, garden centres and many types of holiday accommodation also have the outdoor space needed for this type of pump.

Ground source pumps can also form part of a ‘district heating’ system, where a central plant room supplies the heat for a series of interconnected buildings, and which are ideal for farm barns or commercial warehouses.

Your Current System

Heat pumps are more cost-effective when they are replacing older systems; it may not make commercial sense to install one if your existing heating system is relatively new.

Also, you will save more on your fuel bills if your heat pump is replacing an oil or an electricity-based system. Once installation costs have been factored in, the running costs of both air and ground source heat pumps are similar to those of mains gas, although with new-build properties you may not have to worry about paying for gas connection costs.

With air source heating systems, installation costs may be lower, but the pumps tend to be slightly less efficient than their ground source counterparts. The higher initial costs may make air source more suitable for smaller businesses.

Both Bring Benefits

Another financial benefit which applies to both types of heat pump is the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive. This Government-backed scheme subsidises the cost of renewable or green forms of energy.

In addition, both types of heat pump will save you space; because it uses natural fuel sources, you will not need to set aside a dedicated storage area. There is also no need to worry about deliveries or the risk of someone stealing your fuel. As there is no combustion involved with heat pumps, both types run relatively silently, and will not distract any of your staff.

Both air and ground source heat pumps will work well in the moderate climate we enjoy throughout East Anglia. And both systems require comparatively little maintenance and will last up to 20 years.

How Aztec Heat Pumps Can Help

It has been estimated that as much as 40% of our CO2 emissions relate to the heating and cooling of buildings.

One way to help cut your own carbon footprint is to choose a renewable technology. Aztec Heat Pumps are specialists in installing ground source heat pumps throughout Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex. Here we look at how these pumps work and the advantages they offer.[/ut_header][vc_column_text]

How They Work

Ground source heat pumps work by pumping water through underground pipes, usually buried in a property’s garden. These pipes absorb the existing heat of the ground that, in turn, heat the water that runs into the house.

The heat pump increases the temperature of the water, making it suitable for the hot water and central heating throughout your house or business, including radiators and underfloor heating. Ground source heat pumps still need electricity to operate; however, they use far less electrical energy than the heat they produce.

No Combustion Involved

Most energy systems, such as oil, gas, LPG or biomass fuel, need some sort of combustion to operate. This is not the case with ground source heat pumps, as there are no carbon emissions created or emitted on site. The heat they extract from the ground is constantly being renewed naturally though sunshine and rain water.

It is possible to achieve a completely zero-carbon renewable energy system at your home or business in Suffolk if your ground source heat pump is operated via electricity created by a wind turbine or a photovoltaic system.

After Installation

Ground source heat pumps cut down on carbon emissions caused by vehicle journeys, for example any deliveries you may have had for oil or coal – especially fuels that have come from distant countries.

The pumps themselves are very low-maintenance and reliable, requiring fewer engineers’ visits compared with combustion boilers. Our ground source heat pumps also have a lifespan of over 20 years, longer than most combustion boilers.

Helping Meet Targets

The increased use of ground source heat pumps helps the National Grid with its decarbonisation process. If we are not so reliant on combustible fossil fuels, this will help the help the Government meet the requirements of the UK Climate Change Act, which requires carbon emissions to be cut by 80% by the year 2050 compared with 1990 levels.

As well as doing your bit for the environment, you could also save money; by generating your own heat, your home or business won’t be susceptible to price rises for other more conventional forms of fuel.

Although installation costs can be high, ground source heat pumps are eligible for the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive so you can effectively recoup some of the cost. The RHI is a government financial incentive to promote the use of renewable heat. Switching to heating systems that use eligible energy sources can help the UK reduce its carbon emissions and meet its renewable energy targets.
